There are many options when you choose suitable flooring for your chicken run, especially if you have a chicken run that remains in same position, you many have some problems, for instance, chickens might damage the lawn, and it becomes a bit of a quagmire, difficult to clean after some rain. To solve the problem, there are some options we have:
Wood chips It’s not bark chips, it’s white wood of the tree, you should not mix them up, because bark chips can go mouldy and produce spores, that will cause your chickens respiratory illness. Wood chips is widely used in chicken run or chicken house, due to the clean, light, dust-free, and chicken could scratch around in them.
Sand Coarse sand is inexpensive and it’s easy to clean the droppings from it. Many chicken keepers choose the sand because it’s easy option, the droppings will break down over time after it was buried into sand.
Pea Gravel We advice to pave stones directly on the soil surface, please don’t include any weed membrane underneath, as it will become quite smelly when the droppings is washed to the bottom by the rain.
Choosing the right flooring is not only what we would prefer to use, but it’s about our chickens being happy and healthy, no matter what you choose for your chicken house or chicken run, the most important thing is , please ensure it’s located in flat ground where is free draining.
